"A Chance Encounter" by Bieke Depoorter in Berlin

In "A Chance Encounter", Bieke Depoorter presents photos, videos, installations, and texts about two unconventional subjects: a stripper and escort, who is also a writer, and on the other hand a man with dementia, who suddenly disappeared. She develops a personal and intimate relationship with her subjects.

Depoorter has spent years getting to know the people in her work and has done diligent research. She allows us to observe these people and their life paths without judgment. Through the biographies of Agata and Michael and the two resulting projects, Depoorter examines individual journeys and addresses rarely shown socio-political themes. Through an intense and intimate collaboration with her photographic subjects, the young photographer offers viewers at C/O Berlin unfiltered access to their lives.

She wants to understand the reasons behind people's actions. Some of the images are quite explicit and problematic and may offend the sensitivity of certain visitors. Both projects are not finished and the photographer herself does not know when the projects will be finished.

Bieke Depoorter sees photography as a continuous conversation. Born in 1986 in Kortrijk, Belgium, she obtained a master's degree in photography at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent in 2009. At the age of only 25, she was appointed as a full member of Magnum Photos, one of the most renowned photo agencies in the world.
